Course Overview

This combined Active IQ accredited course is designed for those wishing to become both a qualified Gym Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer. It is suitable for beginners and students without any prior qualifications in fitness training.

Once you have completed the Level 2 qualification, you are fully qualified to work in a gym or fitness centre. On completion of the Level 3 qualification, you are fully qualified to run fitness classes, deliver one-to-one personal training sessions, offer nutrition advice and even start your own business.

Course Outcome

You will receive your ActiveIQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and an ActiveIQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.

Entry Requirements

Students must be 16 or over and a physical fitness is necessary to complete the practicals. It is also recommended that you have some experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, and basic level communication skills.

Assessment

Both courses are assessed by 2 multiple choice exams, a practical assessment, coursework and a portfolio.

Assessment

The Fitness Instructing REPS Level 2 course and the Personal Fitness Trainer REPS Level 3 course are both assessed by 2 multiple-choice examinations, a practical assessment, coursework and a portfolio. For each course, the practical assessment and examinations will take place on the same day at a gym in Birmingham. A more detailed breakdown of how each unit is assessed is provided below.

Course Duration

Once enrolled, you will have two years to complete this bundle (one year per course), which will allow you to work at your own pace, without the pressure of tight deadlines. You will also receive 12 months tutor support for each course, so you can feel confident that you’ll get the help you need. The Level 2 course will take you approximately 157 hours to complete and the Level 3 course will take you approximately 245 hours. Studying around your work and family commitments has never been easier.

Study Method

This course is designed for distance learning at home or at work. Students will receive their learning materials via ActiveIQ’s e-learning platform which contains videos and interactive content to assist you with your studying.

E-Learning System Requirements

You will need Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe website. You will also need to ensure your computer is able to play sound as some of the videos include audio.

Course Outcome

At the end of this course successful learners will receive an ActiveIQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and an ActiveIQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. This means that you will achieve Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications on The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Awarding Body

Your qualification is accredited by Active IQ, one of the UK’s leading Ofqual approved awarding bodies in the health, fitness and active leisure sector. These qualifications will enable level 2 and level 3 entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). REPs is an independent public register which provides regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet National Occupational Standards agreed by the health and fitness industry. This will enable you to obtain public liability insurance to practise as a Gym Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer.

Membership with REPs is valued and respected, enhancing employability, and is recognised in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Exam details

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing

Units 1 & 4: Multiple choice question papers to be completed on the practical assessment day.

Units 2, 3 & 5: Worksheets submitted via the e-portfolio at home

Unit 6: A practical session to be completed at a gym in Birmingham. Unit 6 formative assessment is assessed via a video. Students are asked to film themselves instructing 5 exercises taken from their program cards in unit 5.

Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

Units 1 & 2: Multiple choice question papers to be completed on the practical assessment day.

Unit 3: A case study submitted via the e-portfolio at home.

Unit 4: A practical session to be completed at a gym in Birmingham.

This course comprises the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Fitness Training. You must pass the Level 2 Fitness Instructing course before proceeding onto the Level 3 part of the course.
