nearest SWEAT Union gym.

 

This combined ActiveIQ-accredited course is designed for those wishing to become both a qualified Gym Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer. It is suitable for beginners and students without any prior qualifications in fitness training.

Once you have completed the Level 2 qualification, you are fully qualified to work in a gym or fitness centre. On completion of the Level 3 qualification, you are fully qualified to run fitness classes, deliver one-to-one personal training sessions, offer nutrition advice and even start your own business.

Assessment

The Fitness Instructing REPS Level 2 course and the Personal Fitness Trainer REPS Level 3 course are both assessed by 2 multiple-choice examinations, a practical assessment, coursework and a portfolio. For each course, the practical assessment and examinations will take place on the same day at a gym in either Birmingham or Burton-on-Trent, West Midlands. A more detailed breakdown of how each unit is assessed is provided below:

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing

Units 1 & 4: Multiple choice question papers to be completed on the practical assessment day.

Units 2, 3 & 5: Worksheets submitted via the e-portfolio at home

Unit 6: A practical session to be completed at a gym in Birmingham or Burton-on-Trent, West Midlands. Unit 6 formative assessment is assessed via a video. Students are asked to film themselves instructing 5 exercises taken from their program cards in unit 5.

Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

Units 1 & 2: Multiple choice question papers to be completed on the practical assessment day.

Unit 3: A case study submitted via the e-portfolio at home.

Unit 4: A practical session to be completed at a gym in Birmingham or Burton-on-Trent, West Midlands. 

Course Duration

Once enrolled, you will have two years to complete this bundle (one year per course), which will allow you to work at your own pace, without the pressure of tight deadlines. You will also receive 12 months tutor support for each course, so you can feel confident that you’ll get the help you need. The Level 2 course will take you approximately 157 hours to complete and the Level 3 course will take you approximately 245 hours. Studying around your work and family commitments has never been easier.

Study Method

This course is designed for distance learning at home or at work. Students will receive their learning materials via ActiveIQ's e-learning platform which contains videos and interactive content to assist you with your studying.

You will need Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe website. You will also need to ensure your computer is able to play sound as some of the videos include audio.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course successful learners will receive an ActiveIQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and an ActiveIQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. This means that you will achieve Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications on The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Your qualification is accredited by Active IQ, one of the UK's leading Ofqual approved awarding bodies in the health, fitness and active leisure sector. These qualifications will enable level 2 and level 3 entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). REPs is an independent public register which provides regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet National Occupational Standards agreed by the health and fitness industry. This will enable you to obtain public liability insurance to practise as a Gym Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer.

Membership with REPs is valued and respected, enhancing employability, and is recognised in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Once you have completed level 2 of this course, you will be offered a guaranteed place on a recruitment day at your nearest SWEAT Union gym. The possible locations are:

Course Questions & Answers

What skills do I need to enrol on this course?

This course comprises the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Fitness Training. You must pass the Level 2 Fitness Instructing course before proceeding onto the Level 3 part of the course.

Students must be 16 or over to enrol on this course and a degree of physical fitness is necessary to complete the practical assessments. It is also recommended that you have some experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, and basic level communication skills.

Is there a time limit for the completion of this course?

You may start at any time and have two years to complete this bundle (one year per course). This bundle is truly flexible and adaptable around your lifestyle.

Once you have passed your Learner Achievement Portfolio, you may book to confirm your attendance. Simply email your tutor who will advise you on assessment dates. The practical sessions are run on a student demand basis, with 8 students taking the practical sessions at a time.
