How does it work?

Distance learning simply takes location out of studying your course. You are still able to study a fully recognised and accredited course or qualification without actually having to attend a college.

Be in charge of your study. This means you can study around your life commitments instead of fitting life around your study. On each course page, you’ll see we detail approximately how many study hours are required for each course, which should help you decide if it is achievable alongside your other commitments.

Study from your smartphone, tablet or laptop with our e-learning or choose to study from a course pack.

Our courses are designed specifically to be studied from home. We have made it easy to study around your busy schedule.

All you need to do is enrol on your dream course. Once you have received your course materials, you will have access to expert tutor support through email and a dedicated student support team.

Your personal tutor is there to help you. Contact your tutor whenever you have any questions in relation to your course.

We understand that everyone learns in different ways and at a different pace, so you study for your course on your own terms. With the exception of a few qualifications such as A Levels, GCSE’s, Access to HE etc., there are no strict deadlines to contend with. Submit your coursework to your tutor in as much or as little time as you need and set your own study rules.

If you have any questions that we haven’t answered here, take a look at our FAQs page.

Welcome to Open Study College
I work full time so needed a flexible approach to learning which would fit around my job. I chose distance learning as I know I can work it around my current commitments. I’m studying more for enjoyment but who knows what opportunities it may bring me.
I have found the course materials detailed but also easy to understand, remember and follow, so top marks for that. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wants to be responsible for their education and has the self-discipline.

After completing my GCSE, it spurred on to do my A levels which is completely new to me. I am now studying A Levels in English Literature and Philosophy. The most enjoyable part of my studies is that I’m studying because I want to, not because I have to.
Distance learning allowed me to still get A Levels, whilst working and travelling at the same time. I did A Level work on my lunch break, on trains, on planes, (I wrote an essay about Wuthering Heights in Nashville airport).
It’s a far more active way of learning and I’m able to learn what would have taken three days at school in three hours. It’s allowed me to study the course in a single year as opposed to over the course of two. It has also offered me the freedom to do other things and take other opportunities in my year out.
Without my tutor I couldn't have achieved the grades I got. He has been nothing but an inspiration, ready with answers to my never-ending questions, going over the same things again and again until I understood, never being too busy or having to wait weeks before I received feedback on an assessment. Thanks to his ability in creating confidence within me I now have the belief that I can achieve what once I thought was impossible!
Studied creative writing
I was studying at my local Sixth Form College however they didn’t offer A Level Politics, so I decided to complete it with Open Study College instead. I was confident they would provide the support I needed to work alongside my course. Being allocated a personal tutor meant there was someone on hand throughout my learning to offer guidance and help if and when I needed it.
Studied A Level Politics
There was a teaching assistant role opening up within the school but I needed a CACHE qualification in order to be considered - there was only 5 months to do it! I enrolled with OSC and was able to complete the course and the required 100 placement hours within the required time. I was offered the job! I’ve now moved onto Level 3 purely for my own personal growth.
Studied CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
I’d been working professionally with SEN children for around 4 years and wanted to widen my knowledge around different areas and aspects of special needs. Distance learning meant I could continue with my job and fit studying around my life; not the other way around. I chose Open Study College because their support towards students is amazing and the courses are affordable.
Studied Special Educational Needs Level 3
I chose Open Study College because they offer a great choice of payment methods which suited my needs. The course has opened up further opportunities for me; I’ve since been offered the chance to complete my paramedic training with the Football Association. Distance learning courses allow people the opportunity to be what they want to be in life.
Sports Injury Level 3
I delivered 360 observations, essays, feedback and evidence which were very in depth. Yet, I had the beauty of working and studying around my children rather than 9-4 in a lecture room. This way of learning is absolutely perfect for anyone who needs an income whilst studying towards a new career.
Studied CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
I'm currently an Accountant’s Assistant and chose distance learning to enable me to gain my qualifications and move along the career ladder as quickly as possible. I would like to thank OSC for their support so far. I am determined to continue my studies to become a professional accountant and perhaps even start my own accounting firm!
studied AAT
I chose distance learning because there was no travelling to the local college involved! And it allowed me to study when I best felt like it, meaning I could complete the course at my own pace. My motivation was mostly for personal achievement following a serious illness, and I also partly wanted to study to open up future employment opportunities which I’ve done now that I have successfully completed the course.
studied ICB Bookkeeping and Payroll
I have a condition called Fibromyalgia and some days are better than others, but I knew I could do distance learning at my own pace. I loved the whole course. My tutor was fab – patient and kind, and nothing was ever too much trouble. I’ve now been accepted for a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, and my aim is to become a counsellor after I’ve completed my degree.
