Junior bookkeeper/accounts assistant

Think of this as the “getting your foot in the door” role. You’re the person making sure the numbers end up where they’re supposed to be. If you’re completely new to bookkeeping, this is usually the first step. Junior bookkeepers help with the day-to-day finance tasks that keep a business running smoothly: things like posting transactions, reconciling accounts, and keeping the books tidy.

Certified bookkeeper

This is when you upgrade from “I’m learning bookkeeping” to “I AM a bookkeeper.” You'll be handling full accounts and generally being the reliable numbers person. This is a more professional bookkeeping role, often used by small business clients or internal finance teams.

Take it to the next level with Level 2 qualifications.

Senior bookkeeper/finance manager

If you like the idea of taking on more responsibility (or a fancier job title), this route’s for you. This might involve overseeing bookkeeping operations, managing teams, budgeting, reporting, or even transitioning into managerial accounting or finance management.

Get management ready with Level 3 qualifications.

Payroll bookkeeper/payroll administrator

If you're interested in payroll as well as bookkeeping, you’ll be dealing with payslips, holiday pay, taxes — basically making sure everyone gets paid correctly (which definitely makes you popular).
