Studying doesn’t always have to be to advance your career, sometimes people study for fun instead! When Susan decided to study a Complete Animal Care course, she wanted to do it for fun. She wasn’t looking to change career or progress in any way, she simply loved the idea of studying something because she was interested in the subject! Many students decide to study with us ‘just because’ and Susan is the perfect example of why you should sometimes choose to study to keep your brain happy and healthy. Read on to find out more about Susan’s study journey…
What’s your background in terms of education?
I left school after failing all my GCSEs in 1989 and completely panicked. I then went to college and retook my exams in a year. Thankfully, I passed a year later with English, English Literature, typing, shorthand, Religious Education, Law and several typing exams from Pitmans and RSA.
What made you want to study your chosen subject/course?
I’ve been a vegetarian for 26 years and a vegan for 2, so I was really keen to learn more about animals and the animal care industry.
What was your motivation for studying?
I now have the opportunity to study for fun, so I chose to study because I want to, not because I have to.
Why did you choose distance learning over traditional study methods?
I have a child, work and no childcare, so it made sense for me to study when my daughter was in bed!
Why did you choose to study with Open Study College?
The price was right, and there are plenty of good reviews online.
What have you enjoyed most about your studies?
I love being able to study when I want and in my own time.
What do you plan to do with your course after completing your studies?
I am studying purely for fun as I love my current job. For me, this have given me the courage to go and do another course.
Do you plan to study any further in the future?
This is not my first course since passing my GCSEs. I have done many different courses over the last 20 years including flower arranging and child minding, which was my career for five years.
What are your career goals?
It sounds strange but I have no intention of changing my job. I was a PA for 20+ years and had a good career. 11 years ago I also had a child and made the decision to take a career break. I currently work in catering and I love my job. I’m 46 next month and believe the key to happiness is to continue learning and trying new things. My job is physically demanding and therefore, I need to exercise my brain and Open Study College allows me to do that. I can study ‘just because’ which means I can have fun with it.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
At 16, I didn’t realise how important it was to exercise your brain and study. But, it’s never too late to study and you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!!! It’s also good to be a role model to show my 11 year old that it’s never too late to learn. I have loved every minute of my course. It’s been fun, exciting and different. The satisfaction you feel when you have a study session is immense – I only wish my school days were like this. My course tutor is fantastic. They are there every step of the way and offer extra reading and guidance should you ask for it. The only problem I have is choosing what course to do next!
