Gemma studies five OSC courses

Open Study College student, Gemma

Gemma is a real believer in distance learning – having studied not one, not two, but four courses with Open Study College. She is currently in the process of studying aromatherapy, which will be her fifth course.

Distance learning is perfect for me as I can’t attend a college due to health conditions,” she explains.

“I’m currently awaiting to have stoma surgery, and surgery for a prolapse womb too, so this is the best educational route for me.

I have studied and completed a number of interesting courses with Open Study College including Beauty, Supporting Teaching and Learning; CACHE Level 3 in Childcare and Education; and Animal Care.

I’m not currently employed, as what I really want to do is keep my future possibilities open which is why, while I explore my options and figure out what career path to follow, I am gaining great qualifications right now.

Outside of my studies I am a psychic spiritual medium. I love working with churches all over and working on the rostrum. I enjoy reading and spending time with children – I believe my interest in childcare and educational courses has stemmed from this.

Gemma discusses how the Open Study College team has supported her journey and also offers some handy tips and advice to those considering distance learning:

“I love the tutors at OSC. They are all so friendly and helpful and you can tell that they all really thrive on the success of the students as they go out their way for you.

The learner services team and tutors are great too. They’ve always helped me with any extensions I need, and also send things out to me by post as I don’t have a printer. These small things go a long way.

If I had any advice to offer someone thinking about distance learning, I’d say that they should carry an organiser to help set appropriate time aside to study. Also, read everything and then read it again and make notes if needed. Take your time; you don’t need to rush through any of the courses too quickly!
