Why should you take a NEBOSH course?

With the recent news of NCRQ going into administration, there’ll be people looking for alternatives when it comes to health and safety qualifications.

One of the most popular awarding bodies is NEBOSH. Never heard of them? Well, this blog post will explain to you why they’re the perfect alternative to NCRQ.

What does NEBOSH stand for?

NEBOSH stands for National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.

What is NEBOSH?

NEBOSH is a UK awarding organisation that offers professional qualifications in health, safety, and environmental management. Over 400,000 people from around the world have gained a NEBOSH qualification since its inception over 40 years ago.

Their qualifications are internationally recognised as they help raise the competency of safety and environmental professionals, whilst also aiding individuals on all levels at the workplace.

NEBOSH qualifications are highly respected not just by employers, but by governments and their learners as well.

They don’t actually deliver health and safety training courses themselves, but instead, they provide syllabuses, exams, and assignments to accredited course providers. They then, in turn, deliver training courses to prepare candidates for NEBOSH qualifications.

What is the NEBOSH certificate?

The NEBOSH certificate is the UK’s most popular health and safety qualification and is ideal for those looking to launch a career in safety.

It provides line managers and staff with a sound understanding of the principles of risk management.

The course is divided into three units, with the first two being assessed by exams and the third by a practical assessment.

Once completed, you will then meet the academic requirements for Technical Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH) and associate membership of the IIRSM.

What is the NEBOSH diploma?

The NEBOSH diploma is a step up from the NEBOSH certificate and is a degree-level qualification that meets the academic requirements for Graduate IOSH membership. It is intended for those pursuing a career as a professional health and safety adviser.

It aids in the development of professional competence, whilst increasing a learner’s ability to help organisations manage risk by making sensible and proportionate decisions.

Due to it being designed to meet the needs of the modern workplace, the diploma covers practical skills, whilst also assessing a learner’s ability to apply their skills and knowledge to deliver positive change within the said workplace.

How long does NEBOSH take?

Most people take between nine and 36 months to complete a NEBOSH course, with there being 80-120 hours of study.

That usually compromises a minimum of 68 hours of tuition learning, as well as at least 40 study hours completed by yourself.

NEBOSH vs. NCRQ

You know about NEBOSH now, but how do they compare to NCRQ? Well, they used to be a qualifications awarding organisation based in Chester, developing and delivering qualifications in occupational health and safety. They had a focus on the competence and skills required in the modern workplace.

Choosing between NEBOSH and NCRQ used to depend on what you wanted to achieve from it, as well as your level of experience, time, finance, etc.

A NEBOSH certification will give you that edge, though, when it comes to searching for jobs. You will, of course, need to start with a NEBOSH certificate of your choice before upgrading to the diploma level.
