5 Tips on how to manage employee performance effectively
May 13, 2016
Managing your employees performance effectively is a vital part of a business. It not only allows your business to succeed, but it also helps in developing and improving your employees’ skills. Here are 5 tips on how to manage employee performance effectively:
Setting clear goals
Your employees need to know what is expected of them. You can’t just assume they know, as they won’t be able to perform to the required standard. Make sure you set clear goals so they know exactly what needs to be done in order to meet deadlines. Check employees understanding and challenge any assumptions.
Treat people as individuals
Everyone works and responds differently to various tasks. When managing performance, you will need to know what works well with people and what doesn’t. You will then get the best out of everyone, whilst improving rapports and performance.
Giving regular feedback
Don’t wait until the next review or annual appraisal, discuss employees performance informally on a regular basis and then use formal meetings to merely confirm and record what has been said throughout the year. Therefore if there are any problems, these can be noticed quicker and be sorted faster in order to improve performance.
Focus on the positive
Maximise positive reinforcement and praise employees for their hard work. Show employees that you appreciate their hard work and make them understand that the business could not function without them. Although, this does not mean that you should ignore the negative aspects of their performance. You should always try to find ways to improve.
Support and develop
A good manager supports their employees in achieving their full potential. This support comes in the form of training, coaching, mentoring and much more. If an employee is failing you should always create a plan of action to address the issue.
