Whether you’re working, caring for family, or simply having other commitments, having a busy lifestyle doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on pursuing your goals and developing your career. That’s why our range of nail technician courses can be studied at your own pace when you want, where you want.

What is a nail technician?

A nail technician offers manicures, pedicures, and a range of nail treatments tailored clients’ nail care requirements and preferences.

They specialise in grooming, shaping and painting clients’ fingernails and toenails. This requires a deep understanding of nail health and aesthetics to ensure optimal treatment and enhancement.

Nail technicians also excel in applying acrylic and gel false nails, grooming cuticles, removing calluses and dead skin, removing shellac nail polish, delivering arm and leg massages, and offering a range of other additional services.

Types of nail technician qualifications

We offer nail technician courses from a few different awarding bodies, including QLS, Open Study College, and Beauty Tribe.

You will have the opportunity to start from the very basics with some Level 2 courses, or if you’ve already started your beauty therapy journey, then we also offer Level 3 courses to develop your pre-existing skills.

Distance learning nail technician courses

With distance learning, you can study the same subjects and qualifications you would in a traditional college, simply from home! It takes the location out of studying. You’ll save time and money on travelling, and if you have other life commitments, such as a full-time or part-time job, or if you have a family to look after, it may help to be able to study at a time that suits you.

There are no physical classes to attend or timetables to stick to. With 24-hour access to your course either online or through a study pack, you can study whenever you have free time (if that’s in the middle of the night it’s possible).

Tutor support

When you study your nail technician courses with us, you’ll get unlimited, personal tutor support. Your tutor will be on hand to guide you through your course and help with any questions you may have, ensuring you are fully prepared for any examinations if needed. You’ll never be alone. This is just one of the many benefits you’ll get from enrolling with OSC.

Frequently asked questions

A nail technician is someone who will provide manicures, pedicures, and other various nail treatments depending on the needs of a client’s nail care, as well as their preferences. They are usually self-employed or work in salons, spas, barbershops, or nail salons.

They help groom, shape, and paint a client’s fingernails and toenails, whilst being responsible for the care and decorating of both. With this, they need to have an understanding of the biology of these two body parts, so they know how to best treat them.

Nail technicians will also apply and design acrylic and gel false nails, groom a client’s cuticles, remove calluses and dead skin, remove shellac nail polish, provide arm and leg massage, and much more.

According to National Careers Service, the starting wage for a nail technician is £15,500 per year, going up to £25,000 for a more experienced technician.

The average hourly base salary is currently £11.29p/h, meaning the average annual salary is £22,015 p/y.

An attractive aspect of this job role is the flexibility it can bring. If you are a freelance nail technician and work for yourself, you can pick and choose your own hours to fit your lifestyle.

If you work in a salon or spa, your hours are often set. Most of the time you will be required to work weekends as Saturday tends to be a salon or spa’s busiest day, so you must be prepared to give up some of your weekends. You should also be aware that you will be required to work in the afternoons or evenings, as this is when people book most of their treatments.

Some nail bars offer chair rental, so you are working in a salon meaning you may only receive a percentage of each client’s money paid and will need to pay the salon a monthly or daily fee.

If you market yourself well and get yourself a loyal client base, being a nail technician can be a very flexible and rewarding career choice.
