How do I become a chartered manager?
Becoming a Chartered Manager (CMgr) is about proving your real‑world impact as a manager.
There’s no formal exam. The process assesses your experience, achievements and leadership capability against defined professional standards.
You’ll be evaluated on things like how you lead teams, deliver outcomes, make decisions and grow professionally.
There are three main routes to chartered status, each tailored to different backgrounds and experience levels:
The full assessment route
This is the standard option if you don’t hold a recent CMI qualification but have solid management experience.
Who it’s for:
- Managers with at least 5 years’ experience in a senior or operational management role, OR
- Managers with a management‑related degree and 3+ years’ management experience.
What you’ll need to do
This route is built around a structured assessment process. You’ll need to:
- Complete a written application that sets out your experience, responsibilities, and achievements
- Take part in an online professional discussion with an assessor
The qualification fast track route
This route speeds up the process for people who’ve already completed a CMI qualification and puts you on a clear, structured path towards becoming chartered.
This route is popular because many of the skills and evidence needed for Chartered status are already built into these qualifications, so the assessment process is shorter and more streamlined.
Who it’s for:
- You’ve completed a CMI diploma or extended diploma in relevant management subjects at level 5 or level 6 and have 3 years’ management experience
- You’ve completed a CMI strategic leadership qualification at Level 7 or Level 8, with 3+ years’ management experience.
What you’ll need to do
Submit a tailored application based on your qualification and experience. If approved, CMI will award your Chartered Manager certificate.
The apprenticeship route
If you’ve completed a relevant management apprenticeship, you may be very close to gaining Chartered status without much extra work.
Eligible apprenticeships include:
- Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor
- Level 3 Business Administration
- Level 5 Operations/Department Manager
- Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA)
- Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship (SLA)
How it works
These programmes are designed to align with Chartered Manager standards, which means:
Your end-point assessment is often mapped to the same criteria used for Chartered status
- Chartered Manager assessment criteria are aligned to the apprenticeship end‑point assessment (EPA), so much of the required evidence is already completed as part of your apprenticeship.
- You simply opt in to CMI membership after passing your EPA and apply for Chartered status.
- There’s typically no separate assessment required, though an admin fee and yearly membership apply.
