When Caryl, 60, from Surrey, was made redundant from her position in the Financial Services industry, she decided to set up her own business. Like many other business owners, Caryl was keen to expand her opportunities to attract more clients and increase revenue.
Since starting her business Caryl has provided training and systems development to SME companies. In 2014 a client asked Caryl to help with their bookkeeping, helping her to spot an opportunity to expand. Caryl seized the chance to develop her bookkeeping skills and grow her business by studying a bookkeeping course.
Caryl already had bookkeeping experience having previously studied accounting during her business degree, and completing her own business accounts. By developing her knowledge further, Caryl would be able “to offer a more comprehensive service” to her clients.
Why Open Study College?
Caryl looked at many courses and researched multiple providers to help her pick the best course and provider for her. In December 2014 she enrolled on an ICB Bookkeeping Complete course with Open Study College.
So, what helped her decide? Caryl was “impressed with the information given on the website”, and we were also offering discount at the time, which helped to make her mind up.
A flexible way to study bookkeeping
Whilst studying with us, Caryl was impressed with how quickly her tutor responded to her queries and the feedback she received on her assignments. She also enjoyed the computerised aspect of her studies, especially having the opportunity to use Sage.
Caryl added:
“I enjoy studying anyway, but really liked the idea that I could study at my own pace, without any strict deadlines, especially as I was still working during the day.”
Boosting Business
Now a qualified bookkeeper, Caryl has boosted her existing business by also offering bookkeeping services to her clients. She is currently working with an insurance broker client, completing bookkeeping tasks such as purchase and sales invoicing.
Caryl also produces everything from their monthly management accounts and annual accounts to trial balances. She also completes her client’s financial returns, something that is required by the Financial Conduct Authority.
