How a personal life experience inspired Laura to study counselling with us
July 12, 2019 / Libby Barrett
People return to studying at all ages and for all sorts of reasons. In Laura’s case it was going through the counselling process as a patient that made her consider it as a future career. Thanks to Open Study College’s flexible learning model, Laura’s physical health was no barrier to learning, and our Introduction to Counselling was perfect to give her a taste of the subject before deciding whether to progress further.
What’s your background in terms of education?
I left school with GCSEs and went straight into full time work where I gained an NVQ level 2 in Manufacturing. After that I did an art course at college, as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.
What made you want to study your chosen subject/course?
I had some counselling and really enjoyed it. My therapist was lovely and said she was really pleased how I had picked it up so quickly.
What was your motivation for studying?
I want to be a counsellor to help others the way I was helped, so I chose the Introduction to Counselling course to see if I enjoyed it.
Why did you choose distance learning over traditional study methods?
I have a condition called Fibromyalgia (constant bone pain, fatigue, mind fog etc). Some days are better than others but I knew I could do distance learning at my own pace.
Why did you choose to study with Open Study College?
I looked around and found Open Study College would meet my needs.
What have you enjoyed most about your studies?
I loved the whole course. I learnt a lot about behaviour and a lot about myself. My tutor Lin was fab – patient and kind, and nothing was ever too much trouble.
What do you plan to do with your course after completing your studies?
I want to use it towards becoming a counsellor.
Do you plan to study any further in the future?
Yes, I applied and was accepted for a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, and I start my degree in October.
What are your career goals?
I would like to be a counsellor and help other people.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much Open Study College. I really enjoyed my course and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about behaviour and people. It was really interesting. I had little faith in myself before doing it, and now I feel like I can do anything.
Thanks Laura for sharing your study experience with us.
