Exams and Assessment

To achieve the full History A Level you must take the exams. These will be assessed across the four units. All units will be assessed by three paper-based examinations and coursework. A more detailed breakdown of the assessment details is provided below:

  • Paper 1: Breadth study with Interpretations-Russia 1917-1991: From Lenin to Yeltsin (Code: 1E)
  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Weighing: 30% of A Level
  • Assessment format: 3 Essay questions

  • Paper 2: Depth study - Mao's China 1949-1976 (Code: 2E.1)
  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Weighing: 20% of A Level
  • Assessment format: 3 Essay questions

  • Paper 3: Themes in breadth, with aspects in depth - Protest, agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain 1780-1928 (Code: 36.1)
  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Weighing: 30% of A Level
  • Assessment format: Two-part question, depth essay and a breadth essay

 

  • Coursework Option: The Cold War, its development and its demise (1945-90) (Code: 04)
  • Type: Coursework
  • Weighing: 20% of A Level
  • Assessment format: Detailed essay of approximately 3-4,000 words

Course Duration

You will have 2 years to complete the full A Level from the date you receive your materials. You will be able to study at your own pace and in your own time without the pressure of tight deadlines.

Is this the same qualification as an A Level from a school or college?

Yes! You study the same coursework, take the same examinations and get the same qualification. The only difference is that the course is designed to be studied from home, and you receive full tutor support via email.

What skills are needed to enrol onto this course?

You will preferably have a reasonable grade GCSE or O Level in History as the concepts in the A Level History course follow on and use some of the knowledge you will have gained, this is not essential and don't be discouraged if you don't have this qualification already.

Is there a required reading list?

We recommend the following text books to help you with your studies, however, they are not essential for completion of the course:

Textbooks can be purchased from most good bookshops.

Do I have to sit an exam?

You will need to take the standard A Level examinations in order to fully complete this course. The first available examination date for this syllabus is in June 2017. The examinations run on specific dates which can be obtained by visiting the Edexcel website. You will be required to book these examinations yourself.

Are there any additional costs?

You may want to purchase textbooks to supplement your course, but this is entirely optional. You will also be required to pay for your exams and a fee to take your exams at the examination centre that you choose.

What if I live outside the UK?

You are still able to study this A Level course but must take the examinations within the UK as this is the only guaranteed way to access examination centres.

What happens if I lose my course pack?

We offer a course replacement service which ensures that, if your course pack is lost or damaged throughout the duration of your studies, we can issue you with a new set of materials for a one-time additional fee. This is available by calling our Student Support team on 03300 563100.
