How Alex found a supportive educational envrionment

In early 2024, Alex decided it was time to take a step towards building a future she could be proud of.
She chose to study the Level 4 course in Child and Adolescent Counselling through Open Study College to begin a new educational journey and ultimately, a new career. Her reasons for choosing distance learning were personal and deeply important.
As an autistic learner and a caregiver, traditional college environments were not accessible or supportive enough for Alex to thrive.
Once she turned 22, she was no longer eligible for the educational support that had previously been available to her. On top of that, returning to study after taking time out to raise her young son meant she needed something that was flexible, manageable, and aligned with her long-term goals.
Her story is a powerful example of how online learning can open doors for people facing complex personal circumstances.
Starting a career in counselling
“I chose Open Study College because going into a college setting and socialising with others can be difficult for me. Being a caregiver and autistic, I needed something I could do independently, at my own pace, and that would give me a solid foundation to build on.
"I also wanted something that would give me a route back into education. I had taken a few years out to have my little boy, and I was looking for a way to re-engage with learning while still being present for him.”
Building confidence, and a career path
The Level 4 course in Child and Adolescent Counselling was a turning point. It helped Alex realise that academic qualifications were within reach, regardless of past GCSE results or traditional learning routes.
“This course showed me that I am capable of studying at a high level. It gave me the confidence to believe in myself again and that I can achieve whatever I set my mind to. Gaining this certificate also meant I could register with an accredited board and start working towards my dream career.
"Thanks to the course, I’ve been able to begin setting up my own counselling business, focused on supporting young people, particularly those in or leaving the care system.”
Creating a business with purpose
Looking ahead, Alex plans to continue her education and expand her knowledge even further:
“From 27th September, I’ll be starting my BSc Honours in Psychology with Counselling through The Open University. Once I’ve completed that, I plan to return to Open Study College to take additional counselling courses in more specialised areas so I can be as well-rounded as possible in my professional knowledge.”
Alongside her studies, Alex is building her counselling business, called Brighter Futures Counselling. Through this, she aims to provide emotional support to children, families, and young people in care. One of her goals is to offer every caregiver one year of free counselling.
“I faced many barriers with my mental health after leaving care. For four years, I couldn’t work or study because the support just wasn’t there. I want to make sure no one else has to face that alone.”
Education that fits around your life
Returning to study as an adult can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Flexible online learning means you can work around your responsibilities, whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or simply someone in need of a fresh start.
Alex’s tutor, Annabel Keats, at Open Study College, commented:
“One of the most inspiring parts of supporting learners is seeing them take control of their future.
"This course, like so many others we offer, is not just about gaining a certificate; it’s about helping people rediscover their confidence and sense of purpose.
"Alex’s journey shows how education can be a powerful tool for healing, growth, and change. We’re proud to have played a part in her success and can’t wait to see what she achieves next.”
