Each course will be assessed individually. Assignments should be sent to your personal tutor for grading. Examinations will be booked and taken seperately.

Functionals Skills English exam

The exam consists of 3 papers:

Paper 1: Speaking, listening and communication

  • Duration: 10 minutes
  • Weight: 33.3%
  • Assessment format: Students must take part in in a range of speaking activities

Paper 2: Reading

  • Type: Onscreen assessment or paper-based
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Weight: 33.3%
  • Total marks: 30
  • Assessment format: Students will read and answer questions on three texts

Paper 3: Writing

  • Type: Onscreen assessment or paper-based
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Weighting: 33.3%
  • Total marks: 30
  • Assessment format: Students will complete two writing tasks

Functional Skills Maths exam

The exam consists of 1 paper:

  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Weighting: 100%
  • Marks: 48 in total
  • Assessment format: onscreen or paper-based assessment

You have 2 years to complete both courses. Either study each one individually, or both simultaneously - the flexibility and choice is yours!

Course Outcomes

On completion of this distance learning course and relevant exams, you will be awarded the Exdecel Functional Skills Qualification in English Level 2 and the Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in Maths Level 2. If you only complete one of the two courses, you'll only receive the qualification which corresponds with that course.

Students will need to have a good level of spoken English to complete the speaking elements of the examination. It is also recommended that students are confident using a laptop or computer, as external exam centres may host onscreen only examinations.

Yes, you will need to take the functional skills examinations in order to fully complete this course. You will be responsible for booking and paying for these exams.
