Course Level: 3
Always wanted to become an author of short stories and novels?
This fascinating course is designed to help you get started on your way to becoming a Fiction Writer!
On this dynamic course, you will be encouraged to think about all the elements that make a successful work of fiction. You will then learn how to use these ideas to provide structure to your creativity and put your ideas into a larger fictional project. As you progress throughout the course, you will learn new methods to create characters, develop setting, create authentic speech (dialogue and monologue) and devise exciting, page-turning plotlines.
Through gathering a range of techniques and really honing your writer's craft, you will develop your fictional writing skills to a more professional standard, gaining the foundational skills you need for success as a Fiction Writer.
You will be assessed through a series of written assignments, which are submitted to your tutor for marking. No external examination is required.
You may start at any time and have a full year to complete your studies. We suggest that the course will take approximately 80 hours to complete. This is more than enough time to give you flexibility and work at your own pace without the pressure of deadlines.
The course is designed for study by distance learning at home or at work. Students will receive all course materials by post, as well as tutor support by email.
At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (This lists details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).
The course itself has been designed by Open Study College to meet specific learners’ or employers’ requirements. The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme. This means Open Study College have undergone external quality checks to ensure that the organisation and the courses’ it offers meet a high standard. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification, but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards your Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector.
The course depth and study has been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual.

I've had a fascination with writing and have a lot of time on my hands because of my MS. The study material I received was very informative. The tutor support that I receive is very helpful and quick. I will be recommending Open Study College to all my friends. I am also thinking depending on how I get on with this course, that I might enrol on another.
