An Access Award is an entry level qualification (Level 1) that provides students with introductory knowledge of bookkeeping in order to advance onto higher level AAT qualifications.

3Other Information

This qualification is assessed through 3 computer-based assessments and four tutor-marked assessments. This computer-based assessment is to be sat under controlled conditions at an external examination centre. Your tutor will help you to decide when you are ready to take the assessments.

Course Duration

This course takes approximately 169 hours to complete (84 for Level 1, 85 for Level 2). You will have 18 months to complete your course (6 months for Level 1, 12 for Level 2) so you are able to study at a pace that suits you. 

Study Method

Once you enrol, you will receive all course materials by post and receive full tutor support for six months. Once you have registered with AAT you will also have online access to online resources and additional support materials, including sample assessments.


On successful completion of your AAT exams you will receive a Level 1 Access Award in Bookkeeping and a Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping awarded by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT).

What do I need to enrol onto this course?

You must be 16 years old in order to enrol onto this course, as well as have basic mathematical skills and IT literacy.

Are there any additional costs?

To sit your exams, you must join AAT as a student member, which will then give you access to their resources. However, the cost of the exams are included within the price of the course. 

What if I live outside of the UK?

You are still able to study this AAT course but must take the examinations within the UK at the Irthlingborough centre as this is the only guaranteed way to access examination centres.

What happens if I lose my course pack?

It’s not a problem. We offer a course replacement service, so if you get into trouble and your course pack is lost or damaged, our Student Support Team can provide you with a new set of materials for a one-time additional fee.
