Assessment

To achieve the full English Language and Literature A Level you will be assessed across the 3 components. All components will be assessed by two paper-based examinations and coursework. A more detailed breakdown of the assessment details is provided below:

Paper 1: Voices in Speech and Writing – 9ELO/01

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Weighing: 40% of A-Level
  • Total Marks: 50
  • Assessed: Component 1
  • Assessment format: One comparative essay question and one extract-based essay

 

Paper 2: Varieties in Language and Literature – 9ELO/02

  • Type: Written examination
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Weighing: 40% of A-Level
  • Total Marks: 50
  • Assessed: Component 2
  • Assessment format: One essay question and one comparative essay question

 

Coursework: Investigating and Creating Texts – 9ELO/03

  • Type: Coursework
  • Weighing: 20% of A-Level
  • Total Marks: 60
  • Assessed: Component 3
  • Assessment format: Two pieces of original writing and one analytical commentary

 

Please note that if you choose to study this A Level you will have to sit your exams in the Birmingham examination centre. 

Course Duration

You will have 2 years to complete the full A Level from the date you receive your materials. You will be able to study at your own pace and in your own time without the pressure of tight deadlines.

Is this the same qualification as an A Level from a school or college?

Is there a required reading list?

There is no required reading for this A Level. However you will need to conduct your own research using the internet.

Do I have to sit an exam?

Yes, you will need to take the standard A Level examinations in order to fully complete this course; we will book these exams for you. 

Please note: you will need to sit these exams in the Birmingham examination centre. This is due to the administrative arrangements for sitting coursework and exams.

Are there any additional costs?

No, everything is included in the cost of the package!

What if I live outside the UK?

You are still able to study this A Level course but must take the examinations within the UK as this is the only guaranteed way to access examination centres.

What happens if I lose my course pack?

It’s not a problem. We offer a course replacement service, so if you get into trouble and your course pack is lost or damaged, our Student Support Team can provide you with a new set of materials for a one-time additional fee.
