World Book Day! How Stephenie Meyer got me hooked on reading
March 3, 2016 / Sharnie Carter
On World Book Day, we asked Louisa Jones to tell us about a book that she simply couldn’t put down…
I remember going to Waterstones to pick out my ‘holiday book’. It wasn’t a hard decision to make; I knew exactly which one I wanted – Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Everyone had been going on about it and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. This was when the obsession started.
The conversations between me and my family became minimal. I was hooked on a vampire love story and couldn’t get it out my head. I would take the book out everywhere with me. I couldn’t wait for a long car journey so I could read a bit more before I was told to put it down. I never knew a tension between a vampire and a human could be so strong – something that is so wrong but so right at the same time. Stephenie Meyer told this story so brilliantly, that I simply had to buy the next 3 books and again I was hooked, I had to know more.
Every page had something new. The controversial twist which led to Bella falling in love with a werewolf left me disheartened. How could she do that to Edward? Stephenie really knew how to shock people. The continuous theme of romance, which was inspired from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, helped make this series of books so great. I can tell why they were bestsellers – Stephenie Meyer is very talented.
