This is the NCFE Level 3 Responding to Substance Misuse course. This home learning course is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of the principles and practice of Substance Misuse and awareness. The objectives of the course are to cover a wide range of issues relating to substance misuse, social effects, health and various responses and interventions. Students may find this course beneficial if they are currently working in social care, schools or hospitals. This course will also be suitable for students studying other courses such as care, health & safety or social work.

No prior knowledge is required, this course is suitable for students with or without experience in the field.

Module 1: Understanding Drug Use

• History of drug use
• The effects of drugs
• Drug facts
• Understanding attitudes and values about drugs

Module 2: Recognising and responding to drug use

• Know the signs and symptoms relating to drug use
• The laws in relation to drug use
• Problems associated with drug use
• Harm reduction
• Responses to drug use
• Drug services

Module 3: Communicating with young people about drugs

• Using effective communication skills when talking to young people about drugs

Module 4: Understanding solvent and volatile substance abuse (VSA):

• Reasons why VSA should be a cause for concern

Module 5: Awareness of issues concerning alcohol and young people

• Issues surrounding the use/misuse of alcohol
• The different types of alcohol consumption and their potential effects
• The consequences associated with different types and levels of alcohol consumption
• Attitudes towards and the impact of alcohol use on young people

Module 6: Blood borne viral infections related to drug use

• Understand the nature, extent and effects of blood borne viruses
• Understand how to prevent the transmission of blood-borne viruses
• Understand the range of attitudes and values about blood-borne viral infections

Assessment

The home learning Responding to Substance Misuse course assessment takes the form of a series of written assignments, which are submitted and marked by your tutor. There is no external examination required.

Study Method

The course is designed for study by distance learning at home or at work. Students receive a course manual, assignments and study guide plus tutor support by mail or email. You can start at any time and plan your studies over a period of up to one year from the time of registration. The takes around 60 hours of study to complete.

Qualifications

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a level 3 NCFE Award certificate of achievement. That means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
